We CAN Rules of 2014-2015
General Rules:
The following rules and regulations govern the We CAN competition:
Each team must acknowledge receipt of the ‘Rules and Regulations’. These should be distributed to each team member prior to the competition date. Acknowledgement may consist of an email to the attention of: Mitchell Roselius at [email protected].
These same Rules and Regulations will be explained to the Jury that will be judging the competition structures.
Awards will be given in the following 6 categories:
*Note: These categories are determined at the judges' discretion
Winners of the Juror’s Favorite, Best Use of Labels, and Best Engineered may go on to compete internationally through submission of digital photography to a panel of jurors that convenes at the SDA Convention in the spring of each year.
Building Regulations:
Maximum building size for a structure is 6ft L x 6ft W x 6ft H.
Each team is to provide a sketch or computer image showing out to out dimensions (LxWxH) of their structure by March 13, 2015. E-mail to the attention of: Mitchell Roselius at [email protected]. Send as PDF File.
Team size is not limited, however the maximum number of team members simultaneously working on the CANstruction within the build area is limited to six (6) persons. You may have additional team members assisting with tasks such as unboxing or organizing cans outside the build area. Team members may swap positions during the building period at their discretion. Six wristbands shall be provided to each team to identify the active building team members. The wristbands may be swapped between team members as they swap positions.
Only food cans selected from the provided CANalogue (except for the Team Choice Can) are permitted to be used in the structure.
To supplement the choice of cans provided in the CANalogue and allow for additional creativity and individualism, one additional can of choice (Team Choice Can) may be selected by each team. The Team Choice Can may be of any size, label, etc., but must be a food item and must be selected from HEB. The Team Choice Can must be identified at the bottom of the CAN Selection Form.
The following items are not allowed:
Use of boxed and/or bagged food products is strongly discouraged. The name of the competition is We Can; therefore, jurors prefer canned food be used in the competition.
Props are discouraged but allowed. Jurors tend to prefer pure food structures. Try to solve all design problems with food items. All things equal, a structure with props will lose when judged against a structure with no props. (Example: a structure that has eyes. One entry uses black cans to make eyes; another entry cuts out black circles of paper and tapes on cans for eyes. Once the jury sees that eyes can be made from cans or a food product, any entry using paper cutouts is in disfavor.)
Structures MUST be structurally self-supporting. NO wooden board’s or lumber of any kind, NO plywood, NO tubing, NO sheet metal are permitted. To provide leveling support and/or stability only the following items are permissible: ⅛” foam-core and/or cardboard – for the purpose of leveling or balancing materials but not as load bearing structural support. Using the foam-core or cardboard to bridge is not allowed. Also, a structure where the leveling materials cannot be seen is usually judged superior to a structure where it is in plain view.
Only clear strapping and/or double-faced tape may be used. No duct tape or masking tape may be used. Tape should not be placed over a majority of the label. Note that the label must stay visible at all times.
High-tension rubber bands, nylon string, wire, tie-backs are not permissible.
Adhesives of any type are not permissible.
Each team will be provided a space plan identifying their exact build location prior to arrival. Build locations will be selected by random selection.
Teams are responsible for leaving their build site in the same condition as when they arrived. All trash, build materials, etc. must be taken with the team or disposed of on site.
Acquisition of Canned Goods:
Select the quantity and type of cans desired from the provided CANalogue. Complete the online CAN Selection Form by March 10th, 2015. Access to the appropriate form has been provided to each of the CANstructors through the use of Google Drive.
All of the selected cans will be ordered by and delivered directly to the competition site by We CAN administration. Teams may be required to relocate their can selection from the drop off point at the build site to their individual build location. If this is necessary, the teams will be notified of this ahead of time and dollies and/or carts will be provided.
Each teams selection of cans may still be boxed, paletted, or shrink wrapped at the build site due to delivery requirements. If this should occur, then all shipping materials should be discarded at the conclusion of the build.
Team Poster Requirements:
Each team is required to have a 20” x 30” poster (please note that Heights Venture Architects, LLP has volunteered to print and mount each team’s poster on a foam-core board) that is representative of the structure being built. A self-standing easel will be provided by the We CAN administration to support the posters and allow them to be positioned adjacent to their structure. Each team is simply responsible for creating the poster while We CAN will print, mount, and provide the mounted poster and easel stand.
The following requirements must be adhered to when designing the team poster:
Build-Out:
The Build Day will occur on Saturday, March 28th, 2015.
Sign in occurs between 9:00 am to 9:30 am. An overview of the rules will take place between 9:30 am and 9:50 am - please note that all contestants should be present. By 10:00 am, all contestants should be at their build area ready to start. Please Be On Time!
The CANstruction Build-Out begins at 10:00 am and is over at 4:00 pm. Each team is allowed exactly 6 hours to complete their CANstruction. All work MUST cease at 4:00 pm.
Contributors and/or Team Sponsors may drop by to say hello, observe the progress, hand out gifts, products, etc. Please be courteous, cheerful and happy to meet them - remember that without their financial and in-kind donations we would be unable to participate in We CAN.
Try to do as much prefabrication of foam core cutting or other special materials you require prior to arriving at the Build-Out event. It is highly NOT recommended to be cutting on site.
If you have a chance to practice building you CANstruction, take the opportunity to do so in order to minimize surprises at the site. Please note that SURPRISES will occur.
It is suggested that you order a few extra cans of each type, as surprises will occur.
Upon completion of your CANstruction, send a representative to the onsite WE CAN manager to sign out. A photographer will be present to take a team photograph at the completion of your CANstruction build, do not allow team members to leave prior to taking the team photo.
Judging:
Judging is done anonymously.
Judging will take place at some point in time after the completion of the Build Out.
Team members cannot be on location at the time of judging.
The team poster will be judged simultaneously along with the CANstructions.
Award Ceremony / Gala:
An invitation will be sent out to invite the participating individuals to the Award Ceremony/Gala. The Gala is tentatively scheduled for some time between Tuesday, March 31st and Friday, April 3rd. Further information will be forthcoming.
Business attire is recommended if attending the Awards Ceremony / Gala.
Team Sponsors and other contributors may be in attendance, please introduce yourselves and let them know how much their contribution means to the event.
During the gala, the CANstructions will be available for viewing. As such, it would be good for some team members to be at your structure to welcome everyone and answer questions regarding the concept, design and construction methodologies used.
Photography and Videography:
Photographs will be taken of each entry and at the awards presentation.
DeCANstruction:
DeCANstruction day will occur between 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 4th, 2015. Each entry must be taken down and packed in boxes provided by We CAN for pickup by the Houston Food Bank. Each team is responsible for this DeCANstruction and should allow ample time to completely dismantle the structure and transport the cans to the pickup area. DeCANstruction typically takes about an hour. All teams are required to return to the competition site in order to complete this step.
If any team desires for their cans to be donated to any other food bank, it is the responsibility of that individual team to transport the cans to their prefered food bank.
- Student's Favorite - The students will vote for which structure is their favorite and award that team the student's favorite
- Best Meal* - The best meal is determined by the wholesomeness value of the food as determined by the jurors
- Most Creative* - The most creative is awarded to the structure that has the greatest structural ingenuity, attention to detail,
- Grand Champion* - Given to the structure that is decided by the judges to be the strongest structure representing each of the judging criteria
*Note: These categories are determined at the judges' discretion
Winners of the Juror’s Favorite, Best Use of Labels, and Best Engineered may go on to compete internationally through submission of digital photography to a panel of jurors that convenes at the SDA Convention in the spring of each year.

Each team is simply responsible for creating the poster while We CAN will print, mount, and provide the mounted poster and easel stand.
The following requirements must be adhered to when designing the team poster:
- To ensure anonymity for judging purposes, individual school or team member names must not be included on the front of the poster.
- Include the Team Name, as it should officially appear in the program, on the poster
- Include the Title of Entry, as it should officially appear in the program, on the poster.
- Be sure to include the Team Sponsor(s) names and/or logos of those who donated to your team. This MUST be present on the poster or you will be disqualified. Check the We CAN website home page to confirm your team sponsor. Contact the We CAN Administrator if you have any questions or need a Team Sponsor name or logo.
- A description of the CANstruction structure should be included on the poster. The description should be kept to one paragraph. The description is very important as it is what is provided to the jurors and public as they view each entry. The descriptions are helpful in drawing the jurors’ and publics’ eye to the overall concept, to the rich detail in each design, any play on words, double entendres with the label names, etc. Don’t get caught up in making a long drawn out philosophical statement – keep the description short and let your CANstruction speak for itself. Spend your time describing the choices you made in cans and labels to articulate your theme.
- On the back of the poster each team should be sure to attach the completed Team Information Sheet (obtain from WeCAN). The sheet should include the name of the team’s school, the team name, the title of the entry, the total number of cans selected, the donation amount raised, the name of the CANstructor, and the names of each team member should be present. This information should be printed (not freehanded) and a PDF of this information should be emailed to to the attention of: Mitchell Roselius at [email protected]. Send as PDF File. This information should be received by March 10th, 2015.
