Structure created by Cristo Rey Jesuit College Prepatory School
What is we can?
We CAN is a competition aiming to raise food for local food banks and provide high school students with new experiences and opportunities. We CAN is a competition where the student teams raise funds throughout the year that are put towards buying various canned food goods. The students then design a structure, both by hand drawn designs and computer generated models, that they will build using the cans they bought. The structures the students build will be left up for some time to raise awareness of hunger and then everything will be donated to the food bank. Any money that the students raise that isn't used for purchasing cans will also be donated to the food banks.
how did we can start?
We CAN was conceived as a student project in the summer of 2014. It was sponsored by Harmony Public Schools and has received the support of many other individuals and companies. It is because of this continued support that We CAN has been able to evolve from an idea to reality.
How does we can work?
Throughout the first semester of school, the participating schools work towards fundraising enough money to buy their needed cans. After the first semester of fundraising, the students focus on designing their structure and a poster that will portray their design, as seen in the picture above. Once they have their design, poster, and funds, they will buy the cans they have chosen and then prepare for the competition which will happen in March. They have five hours to build their design on the day of the competition. The structures the students make will be viewable by the public for several days before being donated to the food banks. The teams will have their structures judged on various categories, providing them with friendly competition and the desire to do the best they can. The categories that the teams will be judged on range from best meal and best engineered to best use of color and top three donations.
How can you help?
Despite the support We CAN has already received, any help one could offer would always be appreciated. Buying the cans for a competition like this isn't an easy task which is why we ask anyone who can spare some money, whether it be a few hundred dollars or just a few dollars, to donate to We CAN. Please donate by going to the contact page on this website and following the guidelines there.
